The Power of Perception, Recognition, and Hope (TCH#7)
The story of first meeting of Ram-Hanuman-Sugreev from Kishkindha Kand of Valmiki Ramayan tells us about the importance of perception and recognition in both personal and professional life. Fear often distorts our perception of problems and prevents us from finding solutions, but clarity can lead us to freedom. This is demonstrated in Sugreev's behaviour, as he could not recognize Ram as a solution to his problems until he was advised by Hanuman, who he trusted more than his own perception.
Hanuman played the role of Sugreev's trusted advisor and
friend, demonstrating the importance of mentorship and guidance in the
corporate world. He possessed both theoretical and practical knowledge that he
used to guide and inspire Sugreev. His ability to communicate effectively with
Ram, bridge the gap between them, and adapt his actions to prevent Sugreev's
mind from going into overdrive highlights the importance of emotional
intelligence in leadership. We can see one example of Hanuman’s excellent
communication skill in shlok 5 and 6 of the fifth sarg of Kishkindha Kand of
Ramayan:
“Rajsuyashvamedheshch vanhiryenabhitarpitah,
Dakshinaashch tathotsrushta gaavah shatsahastrashah. (5)
Tapsa satyvakyen Vasudha yen palita,
Streehetostasya putroayam ramstvaam sharam gatah.” (6)
(Hanuman appeared in front of Sugreev with folded hands and
said, "The one you feared as a problem is actually the solution you
have been seeking. The two personalities are the celebrated descendants from
the great house of the Ikshvaku Kings. They are the sons of the great king
Dashrath who performed several glorious "Yajns" such as Ashwamedh and
Rajsuy. Just hearing their names - Ram and Laxman - brings hope to the
ears." He further added, "They are worthy of praise and honour. I
highly recommend that you befriend them for your own benefit.")
The story also emphasizes the importance of understanding
and effective communication. Hanuman recognized Sugreev's fear and negative
self-esteem, and he knew how to communicate effectively with Ram to bridge the
gap between them. Additionally, Hanuman's ability to disguise himself to prevent
Sugreev's mind from going into overdrive highlights the importance of emotional
intelligence in the workplace. A good leader must be aware of their team
members' emotional states and adapt their communication and actions
accordingly.
The power of hope and positivity in achieving success is
another valuable lesson from this story. Even when faced with seemingly
insurmountable challenges, a leader who inspires hope can help their team
achieve the impossible. Hanuman's words always stirred something in Sugreev's
heart, and Sugreev stood up once again on the strength of borrowed hope.
In conclusion, the story of meeting Ram, Hanuman, and
Sugreev from Valmiki Ramayan teaches us valuable lessons about perception,
recognition, guidance, communication, emotional intelligence, and hope. As
corporate leaders, let us follow Hanuman's example and strive to inspire hope,
communicate effectively, lead with emotional intelligence, and recognize
opportunities in disguise to guide our teams towards success.
